50K Runner's Description by Zeke Zucker

If you're looking for flat and fast, this isn't for you. If you are looking for something that isn't quite so challenging as the 50 mile, then this will probably be to your liking.

Both the 50 Mile and 50K start in the same location, on the entrance road near the Cunningham Base Lodge.  Your 50K route takes you down the paved Resort entrance road to Rte. 44.  Sharp left and then another half mile and a right turn onto unpaved Mill Brook Rd. Now 3.5 miles on packed gravel road, first level then climbing to aid station #1 and the start of your first challenging 3-mile trail segment, which also climbs.

Almost 2/3 of your total course is trail, most of which, however, provides fairly decent footing, with little in the way of rocks or roots.  Most of the trail sections are part of the Green Mountain Horse Association trail network and are well maintained.)

After 4+ more miles on roads, you may see 50 Milers entering from a trail on your right. They'll be with you for 3/4 mile until you turn left onto more trail.  In yet another 3/4 mile those folks will join up again. From here to the finish both courses are identical.

After the 12.9 mile aid station there's another brief road segment, followed by a weaving route through the woods and meadows around Blood Hill, some steeps near the 100 finish area and a climb over a 1,600' attention getter.  In the last 11 miles the only gravel road pieces you'll be seeing will be one, then a half and then a quarter mile long, respectively.  The rest of the way is mostly trail, which gets progressively tougher from the last aid station at 28.2.  At about mile 29 you enter the cross country network and with just over a mile to go you'll be crossing the lower Alpine slopes on mostly grassy trails.

Finally you get to enjoy the downhill rush to the finish line next to the base lodge. It is a scenic and exciting course which you will thoroughly enjoy.

For the statistically inclined, 8 miles of it (26%) is on segments of the 100 mile course, and the total vertical is about 5,600'.
